Statistical fluctuations and collective expansion in relativistic many-body systems



Statistical fluctuations and collective expansion in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are investigated theoretically from AGS to LHC energies (from several GeV to 5.5 TeV per particle pair).

A nonequilibrium-statistical model developed earlier is used to determine collective expansion velocities in current works. Theoretical results are compared with experimental data from the CERN SPS, and the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider RHIC in Brookhaven. The longitudinal expansion velocities as determined from the rapidity distributions of net baryons turn out to be significantly larger than the transverse velocities which are obtained from the transverse momentum distributions.

Further studies will be undertaken in particular regarding the energy dependence, with particular emphasis on predictions for Pb + Pb collisions at LHC energies, both for charged hadrons that are produced from the available relativistic energy, and for net baryons (baryons minus antibaryons).
