Description: During recent years, tremendous progress has been made in unravelling new structural aspects of biological systems, mainly due to the sophisticated use of new spectroscopic techniques and fluorescence probes. At the same time, due to the development of new high-throughput methods, we have witnessed an accumulation of a large amount of molecular data on biological systems, including genomics and proteomics projects for many important model organisms. Experimental progress has been accompanied by theoretical process. In particular, concepts from soft matter physics have been applied to biological systems, and new techniques have been developed to analyse genetic and biochemical networks. In order to achieve a deeper understanding of biological physics, on the long run it will be very important to gain a systems level understanding on how the different components of biological systems work together as a whole. The objective of the 347th Wilhelm und Else Heraeus-seminar is to bring together scientists working on and students interested in the physics of cells and tissues, in order to foster interdisciplinary discussions and collaborations towards the establishment of a systems level understanding of the structural aspects of biological systems.
