AbstractThe author presents numerical as well as analytical results for the reduction of the energy gap in the fractional quantum Hall regime due to disorder. The disordered substrate is treated perturbatively. It consists of randomly distributed long-range scatterers. It turns out that the reduction of the energy gap is determined by the mean value of the fluctuations of the potential alone and that it is proportional to the fractional charge of the quasiparticles.
